They also recruit other generous employees to donate their time, talents, and resources to a wide range of charities. Since its inception in January 2002, the Community Service Committee has established new giving initiatives and expanded Aflac New York's involvement in existing programs.
The Morrell Center for Childhood Cancers and Blood Disorders of The Children’s Hospital at Albany Medical Center
Aflac New York has recently embarked on a long term partnership in support of the Child Life Therapy program at the Morrell Center. In addition to financial support, Aflac New York has donated lap top computers that will enable young patients to stay in touch with friends and keep up with school assignments while hospitalized. Employees will also be able to give their time and talents through events and activities shared with the center’s young patients.
United Way of Northeastern New York
Aflac New York is proud of its commitment to the United Way of Northeastern New York, and prouder still of the generous support our employees give during annual campaigns each year. Aflac New York is honored to be a Pace Setter company, helping to set the standard for support of our regional United Way. In addition, employees participate in Hands on Capitaland. This United Way sponsored event matches teams of volunteers with local agencies to improve facilities and build a stronger community.
Charity of the Month
This newly implemented program highlights a different national or regional charity each month. Information about the organization, its mission, and volunteer opportunities are posted in the employee break room. In addition, employees may make a "dollars for denim" contribution to the charity and wear jeans to work on a selected day.
Adopt a Family
For nearly a decade, Aflac New York has partnered with the Albany County Department of Youth and Family Services to "adopt" a family for the holiday season. The company is matched with a family that provides a list of necessities, as well as a wish list from the children. Aflac New York employees purchase, wrap, and deliver housewares, linens, clothing, and toys to the family. Food donations are also collected for the family. This program truly exemplifies the spirit of the holidays and the joy of giving.
Capital Holiday Lights in the Park
Each year the Albany Police Athletic League (PAL) lights up cold winter nights in Albany's historic Washington Park with a fabulous drive-through light display. The glow of friendly snowmen, fishing polar bears, a golfing Santa, and other fanciful creations delight the thousands who tour the display by car or horse-drawn carriage. All proceeds benefit the many youth services provided by PAL. Aflac New York is proud to be part of this wonderful Capital District holiday tradition.
Other Community Activities
Through employee and corporate contributions as well as volunteer hours, we also provide support to:
- Regional Food Pantries of Northeastern New York – Aflac New York is proud to sponsor the annual Holiday Hunger Appeal, our regional food bank's primary fundraiser. We are prouder still of the employees who volunteer their time to solicit donations during the busy holiday shopping season.
- Take Your Daughter to Work Day – Organized by the Women's Business Council of the Albany-Colonie Chamber of Commerce, the Take Your Daughter to Work program provides daughters of employees and girls from local school districts the opportunity to experience the work environment firsthand.
- Juvenile Diabetes Foundation – Aflac New York has been a sponsor of the Walk for the Cure for several years.
- Alive at Five – This weekly concert series brings all types of musicians to the streets of downtown Albany. Jazz, rock, country, Celtic, blues, and folk performers give free, open-air concerts underwritten by corporate sponsors like Aflac New York.
